UNLOCK THE TRUTHEuropean government complicity in US-led secret detention and rendition.
Following 9/11 US agents operating in countries around the world secretly transferred people who were suspected of links to terrorism from country to country. Most were held without charge or trial, sometimes for years, in what became known as the ‘rendition’ programme. These secret operations violated international law and often involved multiple human rights violations. Prisoners were subjected to enforced disappearance, secret detention, torture and other ill-treatment. European governments allowed the US to use their airspace and airports, some hosted secret CIA prisons.

Amnesty Poland has recently launched a report titled ‘Unlock the Truth: Poland's involvement in CIA secret detention’. This is to accompany a new targeted campaign – Unlock the Truth in Poland - demanding accountability from Poland for their role in the US – led renditions and secret detentions programme.Compelling evidence leaves little doubt that a secret prison operated in Poland between 2002 – 2005. Detainees were reportedly held there in violation of Polish and International law and tortured or otherwise ill-treated. An on-going investigation in Poland has already taken over 5 years. Poland can play a critical role in Europe by asserting its commitment to human rights. The authorities must complete the ongoing investigation into CIA operations on Poland territory, bring those responsible to justice and reveal the truth about its involvement in the CIA rendition and secret detentions programme.
